Super Bowl LI: Powered by Solar

As Super Bowl LI nears, and as those of us in New England, Atlanta, and all over the country gear up for the big game, there is so much focus on the teams, while the stadium in which they’ll play is sort of in the shadows. But it shouldn’t be.

NRG Stadium is home to the Houston Texans and RodeoHouston™. It’s also been a leader in renewable energy for stadiums across the country. It was the first pro football and rodeo stadium with an indoor/outdoor retractable roof, natural grass stadium. It was also the first professional stadium in Texas to install solar.

NRG Stadium is part of a 350-acre complex that includes NRG Arena, NRG Center and NRG Astrodome. It’s also on the cutting edge of professional sports stadiums when it comes to sustainability.

Here’s why:

Solar Array

According to the United States EPA, the 600 module solar array offsets CO2 emissions that are equivalent to 22,676 gallons of gas!

That alone is very impressive, but there’s more….

Solar Canopies

At the main entrance you’ll find a 4,500 sq. ft. weatherproof canopy that shelters not only the stadium vendors, but fans as well, as they pick up their tickets. The PV modules on the canopy are transparent.

There are also 2 solar pedestrian bridge canopies that span from the parking lot all the way to the stadium. How cool is that?

Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Fans who drive electric or hybrid vehicles can park in a prime location, right up close to the stadium, thanks to the 6 eVgo electric vehicle charging stations.

Energy Efficient LED Lighting System

The field lighting includes 480 optically enhanced, high efficiency LED fixtures, which provide much brighter, more uniform lighting throughout the stadium so players and fans can experience an enhanced experience. The lighting system also has the ability for special effects, and will help the stadium see a huge savings in overall operating costs, with a total energy savings of 60%!

Nice job, NRG Stadium – this commitment to renewable energy is one of the best plays in football.

As fans, you or I can be there for Super Bowl 51! Yes, it’s true, there are still tickets available, and they start at only $5874.00 each….I think I’ll take 2.
