Although we might know it from a logical standpoint, most of us don’t consider that nearly half of the greenbacks we dole out monthly to pay our utility bills go directly towards heating and cooling our homes. HALF. That’s huge. Just like wearing a hat on cold days, your roof is your best defense against that chill in the air. And on the flip side, your roof is also your best defense in keeping your home cooler in the summer months, which will translate to decreased cooling costs for you. And really, who doesn’t want to save money? An energy efficient roof will not only reduce energy needs, and save you money; it will also contribute to a higher resale value, should you ever decide to sell your home.
Here are some of the ways you can transform your roof into a more energy efficient one, while saving yourself some hard-earned cash at the same time:
#1 – Install solar panels
This just in from Captain Obvious. Gathering usable energy emitted from the sun is easy, extremely cost-effective, and will pay itself off, saving you money in the long run. With the cost of going solar dropping drastically over the years, the solar dream can become a reality fairly easily, and inexpensively.
#2 – Cool it down
There’s a lot of talk these days about “cool roofs”, and with good reason. The most simplified way to “cool” it down is to apply a cool roof coating….not to be confused with roof PAINT. While paint will obviously lighten the color of your roof, it will not reduce the heat your roof conducts. A true “cool roof” coating contains reflective, elastomeric properties that are optimal in cooling down that roof, while more easily adhering to the roof’s surface. The infused polymers will also make the coating a far less brittle option than paint, extending the life of the coating in the process.
If you’re having a new roof installed, or are in the midst of new construction, cool roofing materials are readily available and come in a broad range of options. Just be sure to get your roofers advice on what’s best for your climate and your roof type.
#3 – Pay a visit to your attic
Now is as good of a time as any to think about the insulation in your attic. An improperly insulated attic means more air conditioning is needed in the warmer months, and additional heating is needed in the colder months. Poor ventilation is a danger to your roof. Adequate ventilation is essential to proper roof function, allowing fresh air into the attic, resulting in stale, moist air being pushed out. If the ventilation isn’t adequate, you can expect common problems like mold, mildew, rust, soggy decking, heavy icicles and ice dams. It’s critical to properly ventilate (and insulate) attic spaces to avoid these pitfalls.
There are a wide variety of options available when it comes to creating an energy efficient roof. Explore them all and find out the best options for you, and your home.
